What is a Neurodegenerative Disease?

While there are many people all over the world who battle against neurodegenerative diseases every single day, many do not know what they are, and what the correct definition of them is. Therefore, it is important to know how to identify these diseases and the classifications of them. 

Neurodegenerative diseases can be defined as different types of diseases where cells in the central nervous system begin to deteriorate, stop working, and even die off completely. Also, these diseases typically get worse over a period of years, and often times do not have any type of cure to improve the human’s health. 

It is also important to know what the most common neurodegenerative diseases are so everyone has a better idea of how they can spot them. A couple examples of the most common diseases are Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease. Just from these diseases, there are almost twelve million people who have been diagnosed with them recently. 

The unfortunate truth is that these neurodegenerative diseases are typically more common with the aging process. Additionally, a person’s genes will play a large role in determining if they should take early medical action in order to prevent suffering from the same disease that a previous family member had suffered from.  While a disease is not solely based on genetics or a family background of it, it would be wrong to suggest that historical information doesn’t play a role in the determination of the genesis of a Neurodegenerative disease.

One thing to keep in mind, in order to stray away from an increased risk of obtaining a Neurodegenerative disease, is the environment and the environmental factors you are surrounding yourself with. It has been widely researched and studied by scientists across the globe – and proven scientifically, that metals such as lead, manganese and arsenic can increase the risks of obtaining a neurodegenerative disease significantly. Additionally, pesticides, air pollution, your diet, caffeine, drugs, and alcohol can also play a factor in enhancing your chances of getting one of these diseases. It is important to always recognize what you are putting in your body in order to keep yourself healthier as you grow older. The more you keep yourself away from these toxins – or do something to reduce the impact of them – the less likely their impact will be on your long-term health.  By keeping these factors in mind, do your best to set yourself up for a long, healthy and happy life by acknowledging what neurodegenerative diseases are. Take the time to increase your knowledge on these diseases as you will be able to grow more aware of what you must do to reduce the risk of suffering from one.   And make a plan to do something daily to reduce your exposure to toxins, maintain some self-care, and reduce your stress levels.  Those can – and will – make a significant difference in your health.
